Inspiration is a funny thing. Sometimes it can take years (and sometimes decades) for all the parts of a story to jigsaw together.
With this one I was walking out of the kitchen, through the living room and back towards the spare bedroom where
I do all my writing. On TV there was a news report about astronomers discovering a strange hexagon shaped hole at the top of
the planet Saturn. By the time I reached my computer I knew exactly the story I was going to write, head to toe, beginning to
end, characters and all. Everything except the title. Originally the piece was called "The Machine," but the good people over
at the Aphelion webzine said that they would need something a bit more memorable before they would publish it. I think I spent
more time trying to come up with a decent title than I did a decent story - thankfully I don't think it shows.
So what is Saturn & Sphinx about? It's a mix of sci-fi adventure and Lovecraftian horror. It's a novelette about the expedition
of a scientific team sent through that hexagonal hole to explore the surface of Saturn. It's about what they discover while down there, about Saturn, themselves, and
the purpose of life.
